VELMA - ORIGINAL PAINTING BY AVA REID

Part of the MaccPow 2026 Commission Collection

Velma Dinkley is a strong woman that we all know to be quietly brilliant, always in control, and impossible to forget.

This original acrylic painting by Macclesfield artist Ava Reid is a love letter to Scooby-Doo’s sharpest mind.

Velma gazes out from the canvas with calm, steady composure, her signature bold framed glasses, dark bob and rust-orange polo neck captured by Ava with wonderful confidence. Her textured top features Ava’s characteristic dotted marks in burnt orange against warm brown, while behind her the canvas erupts in lime green and teal shapes that perfectly contradict Velma’s deadpan cool.

Ava chose Velma for her brains, her calmness, and her quiet refusal to be anything other than exactly who she is. There is something deeply knowing in this portrait. This is a celebration of the one who always figures it out but never needs to shout about it ;)

About the Collection

This painting is one of nine original paintings created for MaccPow 2026, Macclesfield's comic art festival, celebrating the town's rich creative heritage. Ava was commissioned to depict females from the world of comics and comic art, characters whose vibrancy, cheekiness, or strength of spirit resonated with her. The result is a collection that is as personal as it is powerful.
