Ava Reid is a painter who paints what she feels without hindrance, and in her latest body of work this is more evident than it ever has been.
How Do You Know My Name? is the fourth solo exhibition from Ava Reid, a Macclesfield-based artist with Down’s syndrome and autism whose work has had people talking and celebrating her artistry since her very first show.
This collection of 13 original acrylic paintings on canvas is showing at ARC Gallery at the Hat Works Museum in Stockport from 6th June to 27th September 2026, and if you have ever stood in front of one of Ava’s paintings, you will already know why a visit to this exhibition is a must.
Previous visitors to Ava’s exhibitions have described feeling overwhelmed by the pure emotion her work conveys. They speak of feeling the joy that these works transmit. They've written about the freedom they see in Ava's paintings, a rare quality where the artist has never learned to second guess herself, never felt the need to make work that looks like anyone else’s, or been restricted by the need to paint something that looks the way other's think it should. More than one visitor to Ava's previous shows have said that they wanted to climb inside her garden paintings to see what lies beyond the canvas!
How Do You Know My Name? is a collection of intimate portraits and vivid landscapes inspired by the people and places Ava loves most, family, friends, gardens, and the city of Stockport itself, encountered fresh through Ava’s eyes during her time at ARC.
Each painting is named for its subject. Each one is unmistakably hers painted in her unique, recognisable style.
